Arturo was born in Havana, Cuba. He is admitted
to the New York (1969) and Florida (1973) bars. He graduated
from Duke University with a B.A. degree in 1965 and obtained
his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1968.
He was the recipient of the NYU-Ford Foundation Civil Law
Program Scholarship to the University of Madrid School of
Law, which he attended from 1968 to1969 and trained at Bufete
Vega Penichet, Madrid, Spain, where he obtained practical
experience in Spanish and comparative law.
Arturo commenced his U.S. legal career with
the New York-based firm of Shearman & Sterling, where
he was a member of the Corporate Department. In 1976, he founded
a small international law boutique in New York, which merged
into Gadsby & Hannah in 1982, concentrated in advising
financial institutions doing business in Latin America and
legal aspects of foreign investment in the US. After moving
to Miami in 1986, he joined the international law firm of
Squire, Sanders & Dempsey as a partner, where he helped
expand the firm's Latin American practice until leaving in
1993 to become a founding member of this firm.
Arturo has developed extensive experience
in the representation of both US-based and Latin American
clients in their international business and investment transactions.
In terms of disciplines this practice concentrates in international
tax and estate planning of high net worth investors, international
financial transactions, corporate acquisitions and international
license agreements, including - with the growth of the Latin
entertainment industry in Miami - an increasing involvement
in the legal representation of Latin American TV stations,
independent TV producers, authors and others involved in the
Spanish-language television industry.
Arturo has been a frequent speaker at international
seminars on topics including tax planning, international contracts,
exchange of information treaties and asset protection structures.
In addition to the Bars of New York and Florida, he is a member
of the Bar of the U.S. Court of International Trade. He has
served as a director of the Colombian and Spanish Chambers
of Commerce and the Florida International Banking Advisory
Council to the Florida State Banking Department. He is a member
of the American Bar Association: [Committee of U.S. Activities
of Foreigners (Tax Section) and International Law Section];
the Florida Bar: [International and Tax Sections (Foreign
Tax Committee)]; the Cuban American Bar Association; the Estate
Planning Council of Greater Miami; and the London-based Society
of Estate and Trust Practitioners (Miami Chapter). Arturo
is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French. In 1999, he became
one of the first Florida attorneys to be certified by the
Florida Bar as a Specialist in International Law. Arturo has
earned Martindale-Hubbell's highest rating for his professional
